United Church of Christ endorses gay marriage

That's right. The intolerant, hate-filled, supposed "Christians" that are the theocons do not have a monopoly on religious faith in America.

The United Church of Christ (UCC) has become the largest denomination to endorse gay marriage. And in Atlanta, no less! The decision was nearly unanimous.

The committee also voted against adopting a resolution declaring marriage to be between one man and one woman.

If the General Synod approves this as is, they expect there may be individuals or entire congregations that may pull out of the church. Several committee members asked that any dissenters be treated with respect and that their feelings be honored. UCC congregations are autonomous, however, so no one group has to follow it.

Anyone familiar with the issue of gay rights and religion knows that the UCC has long supported gays/lesbians. In the 1970s, the UCC became the first major Christian church to ordain an openly gay minister, something many other Christian denominations are unwilling to do even today. The UCC even declared itself to be "open and affirming" of gays and lesbians twenty years ago.

I am just wondering which bible and which god (little "g") they are following...nevermind, I am sure they have a "new" version tailor made for this with any "offending" verses removed.

I did not see any chapter on how husbands are supposed to treat their husbands or wives their wives...this is pure sin.

This is not "Thy Kingdom come on Earth as it is in Heaven"...this is Truth being thrown to the ground.

And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

Wow, I am really speechless. That is great. Maybe now if other churches could follow the way....

andrew, what do i not know? i just stated the facts about the case.

the only opinion i inserted was calling the theocons intolerant, hate-filled, and supposed christians.

as for lesbians/gays, do you not agree that they are intolerant? are you telling me that i have been wrong all along and theocons welcome and accept lesbians/gays? was all that rhetoric just a joke? a long and nationally broadcast piece of performance art?

maybe it's not fair to refer all theocons as hate-filled. i'm sure dick cheney does not hate his daughter. well, is dick cheney really a theocon? i think some right-wing republicans pander to the religious right for votes, but they don't really believe in their model for a theocratic united states.

from personal experience, i can tell you there are some theocons who truly hate lesbians/gays. not only do they believe that 'god hates fags' and that every gay person will go to hell for even thinking about cunnilingus or fellatio with a fellow human being of the same gender, but they think it is their mission to give a taste of that hate here on earth. their blood is boiling with hatred for someone who would do such a vile thing as love someone of the same gender, and they justify it by siting verses from the old testament or the teachings of the homophobic and christian-killing paul (what a coup if he killed a bunch of them, then pretended to be one of them and became their leader, and effectively supplanted the love-oriented message of Jesus with his hate-filled rhetoric).

thieves, liars, adulterers, etc., do not elicit the same kind of hate at all. just murderers and same-sex fellaters and cunnlingus providers.

and while 'supposed christian' may seem harsh, when someone is so embroiled in loathing for lesbians/gays that they ignore the actual teachings of Christ the Lord, i think it's fair to question their actual understanding of the faith they claim they follow.

To be "open and affirming" to gays/lesbians is to say that you do not agree with the Bible. Why not be "open and affirming" to murderers, liars, adulterers...and so on. You cannot agree with only sections of the Bible you happen to like. That is what we call "cherry-picking" the Bible. Sure God loves ALL people (including gays) (As we should!) but he HATES the sin. Should we then promote people to carry on in their sin (no matter what it might be!)? To say you openly allow/approve of their sinful lifestyle is ridiculous, if you are a Christian of course. I guess that is the question though that is very unclear here. Do you consider yourself to be a Christian?!

Nora,

Just stopping by your blog. Curzon from CA alerted me to your fine writing.

I have previously written a pseudo-epic post on theocons in America, and the ongoing homosexualist struggle.

Take care, Nora,
